<PREREQUISITES>3rd year: Any two second year level Criminology subjects; 4th year: Admission to Criminology Honours.
<SEMESTER>First semester
<CONTACT>A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar.
<OBJECTIVES>Upon completing this subject students should:
<ul>
<li>understand the structure and elements of an empirical research project;
<li>understand the structure and elements of a report of an empirical research project;
<li>understand basic concepts and techniques commonly used in empirical criminological research;
<li>be able to understand and critically evaluate empirical research in criminology, in the light of the preceding knowledge;
<li>be able to write a detailed research proposal for an empirical study in criminology, in the light of the preceding knowledge.
</ul>
<CONTENT>Analysis of empirical techniques and evaluation practices in criminology.
<ASSESSMENT>Up to 5,000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6,000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
