16.7 3rd and 4th years To be advised. 3rd-year: Any two second year-level Criminology subjects; 4th-year: Admission to Criminology Honours. First semester A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar Students completing this subject should be:

• familiar with the contemporary criminological topic or topics dealt with in lectures;
• able to evaluate research concerning the contemporary criminological topic or topics in terms of the adequacy of the methodology employed in the research and the effectiveness with which the research is presented in publications;
• able to conduct library research and produce a logically structured, coherent and concise evaluative report setting out prior work on the area or areas in question and indicating ways in which the topic or topics could be analysed in future studies;

A detailed investigation and analysis of one or more criminological topics of contemporary concern. Up to 5,000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6,000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
