<TITLE>SENTENCING THEORY AND PRACTICE</TITLE>

<PREREQUISITES>3rd-year: Any two second year-level Criminology subjects; 4th-year: Admission to Criminology Honours.
<SEMESTER>Second semester
<CONTACT>A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar.
<OBJECTIVES>Students completing this subject should:
<ul>
<li>have a general understanding of the nature of sentencing, the sentencing process and the range of sentences available to courts in Australia;
<li>be able to understand and critically evaluate research into the nature, operation and effectiveness of the sentencing system;
<li>be able to conduct research into aspects of sentencing;
<li>be able to present orally and in writing, reports of their research.
</ul>
<CONTENT>An examination of sentencing law, the sentencing process, the purposes and justifications of sentences, judicial discretion and sentencing guidelines, and the nature and effectiveness of the sentencing options available to the courts.
<ASSESSMENT>Up to 5,000 words of written work at 3rd year level and 6,000 words at 4th year level. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
