<SEMESTER>Second semester
<CONTACT>Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial per week.
<OBJECTIVES>Students completing this subject should:
<ul>
<li>have a general understanding of different conceptions of crime, the divisions of law, the basic concepts of criminal liability and criminal procedure;
<li>appreciate the nature of legal discourse and reasoning.
<li>be able to identify specific areas of criminalisation and de-criminalisation and understand the significance of the process;
<li>develop skills in dealing with legal sources
<li>be able to conduct library and field research into aspects of criminal law and procedure.
</ul>
<CONTENT>Conceptions of crime, the role of criminal law in regulation of behaviour, concepts of criminal responsibility and procedure.
<ASSESSMENT>Up to 5,000 words of written work. An examination may be substituted for part of the written work.
