12.5 1st year Dr R White. First semester Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial per week. Students who complete this subject should be able to:

• identify the major theoretical perspectives within criminology;
• use and understand key concepts and terms within criminology;
• discuss critically the strengths and weaknesses of techniques used to measure, classify and define crime and criminality.

The aim of this subject is to provide students with a foundation overview and understanding of the diverse and competing interpretations regarding the criminal act, the nature of people who engage in offending behaviour, the situations and contexts within which crime is defined and takes place, and the explanations put forward for the causes and consequences of crime in society. A tutorial presentation and major essay (2,000 words) (50%) and a 2 hour examination 50%.
