<PREREQUISITES>This is a subject primarily designed for native speakers of English. Non-native speakers will need a score of at least 7 on IELTS. Admission to this subject will be subject to a placement test.
<CONTACT>One 1-hour lecture and two obligatory 1-hour tutorials. The subject will be offered in Semester 1 and again in Semester 2.
<OBJECTIVES>Students who complete this subject should be able to
<ul>
<li>write assignments for their Science/Technology subjects and for some professional purposes.
<li>participate in oral presentations and discussions in a range of academic and professional situations, including giving long talks, and arguing persuasively.
<li>use graphic forms of communication to support written and oral communication.
<li>use electronic communication aids. To be placed in this class, students must have at least basic computing and word processing skills.
</ul>
<CONTENT>Students will be made familiar with aspects of communication in the wider multicultural community, as well as in academic situations. Readings and projects will raise issues related to the need of non-scientists/technologists to understand technical matters. A range of hands-on activities will be carried out, which will be relevant to students' fields of study and future career needs, such as oral discussions and use of electronic aids to communication.
<ASSESSMENT>Continuous assessment on class and homework tasks, major writing assignments, oral, graphic and electronic presentations, all equivalent to 5,000 words.
