Not available to Arts students. 12.5 points (First year) Prerequisites: This subject is primarily designed for native speakers of English. Non-native speakers will need a score of at least 7 on IELTS. Admission to this subject will be subject to a placement test. One 1-hour lecture and two obligatory 1-hour tutorials per week. The subject is offered in Semester 1 and again in Semester 2. Students who complete this subject will be able to:

• write assignments for their Science/Technology courses and for some professional purposes;
• participate in oral academic and professional situations, ranging from formal planned presentations to informal unplanned talk, in both individual and group contexts;
• use graphic forms of communication to support spoken and written communication;
• use electronic communication aids such as basic word processing, and accessing information through the internet. Computer expertise is not necessary.

A range of hands-on activities will be carried out to develop students' communication skills, such as giving oral presentations and using computer software. As far as possible, students will work on tasks and skills which are relevant to subjects which they are studying, and to careers which they may pursue in future. there will be continuous assessment on small class and homework tasks, major writing assignments, and oral presentations, all equivalent to 4,000 words. 12.5 Prerequisites: This course is primarily designed for native speakers of English.
