<OBJECTIVES>Students on completion of the subject should have acquired an understanding of Byzantine history, literature and society through the study of the evidence for the period and have also acquired the necessary skills for the interpretation of this evidence.
<CONTENT>Byzantine history, literature and society in the 6th century; the role of the classics in Byzantine society.
<ASSESSMENT>3,000 words of written work (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (50 per cent).
