<OBJECTIVES>Students on completion of this subject should be able to: recognise the distinctive features of the main genres of classical literature; to understand how to approach classical literature and to understand its achievements. Students should also have acquired a knowledge of the distinctive features of the environments in which such works were written.
<CONTENT>A study of famous works from selected genres of Classical Greek and Roman literature which have helped shape European literature, namely Epic, Tragedy, Lyric Poetry, and History, together with a study of the societies which produced such literature with emphasis on Greek (Athenian) Democracy and Roman Imperialism.
<ASSESSMENT>Written work of 2,000 words (50 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (50 per cent)
