• understand the development of narrative cinema from the 1900s to the 1950s;
• demonstrate knowledge of the chronological evolution of the Australian film industry from the Silent Era to the present day;
• identify and develop the pertinent features of each phase in the history of the Australian film industry, and understand its significance in the context of Australian society.

A study of the main strands of pre-and early film history from 1900 to the 1940s, including the development of narrative film language, the structure of the film industry, and the use of sound and colour in the cinema. The subject will also focus on the development of the Australian film industry to the present day, and its significance in the context of Australian society.
