<OBJECTIVES>Students who complete this subject should be able to:

<li>assess the historical significance of debates about population growth and Australian environments; understand the place of immigration in these discussions; situate contemporary policy stands and community activism in this context.
</ul>
<CONTENT>History of 'populate or perish' debates about the 'carrying capacity' of Australian environments; contemporary movements to limit immigration and population growth because of their 'damage' to urban and non-urban environments, the nature of the evidence on this question; meanings of population policy in Australia, especially regarding gender, ethnicity and region.
<ASSESSMENT>One 6000 word research essay.
