<OBJECTIVES>Students on completion of the subject should be able to: discuss intelligently the results of archaeological work in Hellenistic Palestine, from historical and methodological points of view; Reflect on the 'clash of cultures' motiv especially as it applies to Hellenism and Judaism; Articulate the importance of Hellenisation for the processes which produced Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity.
<CONTENT>The subject deals with archaeological method and specific outcomes of archaeological practice within the context of the history of Palestine within the range of years 300 BCE to 135 CE.
<ASSESSMENT>Essay: one 3000 word essay (30 per cent), Tutorial: one 1000 word paper [assessed together with the tutorial presentation] (20 per cent), Examination: one one-hour test during the semester (50 per cent).
