<CONTACT>A 2-hour lecture and a 1-hour tutorial a week.
<OBJECTIVES>Students completing this subject should:
<ul>
<li>have an understanding of the construction of gender in a variety of the world's societies;
<li>have gained a knowledge of gender-based systems of social classification in non-Western societies;
<li>have acquired a knowledge of contemporary critiques of the representation of women&iacute; s and men&iacute; s lives in ethnography; and
<li>have explored problems of gender bias in ethnographic research and writing.
</ul>
<CONTENT>Cross-cultural and comparative perspectives on the social construction of gender, with a focus on ideologies of femininity and masculinity; gender-based classification systems; interrelations of gender, power and authority.
<ASSESSMENT>Written work or equivalent totalling 5,000 words.
