<CONTACT>Two hours of lectures and a 1-hour tutorial a week. Regular attendance and contribution to discussion in tutorials are expected.
<OBJECTIVES>Students completing this subject should:
<ul>
<li>understand the basic arguments for and critiques of cultural relativism;
<li>understand the significance of biological evolution for explaining human social behaviour;
<li>have a general familiarity with the range of forms of social structure and social organisation to be found in ethnographic literature;
<li>have a general understanding of the conditions under which social change occurs;
<li>have a background of relevant ethnographic knowledge on which to base further anthropological studies.
</ul>
<CONTENT>An introduction to the anthropological study of forms of human behaviour and social organisation and social change, with an emphasis on the descriptive analysis of particular societies and cultures.
<ASSESSMENT>Written work of up to 3,000 words for the semester and a 1-hour class test.
