12.5 Clare Newton. Building Technology 3A Second semester Up to 6 hours of lectures, tutorials, studio and laboratory work, and site visits per week. On completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate that they:

• are able to undertake the documentation (drawings and specifications) required to convert a design concept into a medium-scaled, partially-serviced, commercial or institutional building;
• have an understanding of architectural office systems for administering the various stages of a project from its inception to completion, including: documentation delivery systems, contracts, and the nature of an architect's responsibilities;
• have a working understanding of the measurement of quantities and the processes for estimating costs;
• have an understanding of the various participants in the building process, including: clients, consultants, project managers, contractors, sub-contractors, authorities.
• understand the design of more complex structures including frames, slabs, shells and membranes.

Documentation practices, including: design development; contract documentation; specification writing; bills of quantities; coordination of consultants, contractors and authorities; and the management of the documentation process in a design office and on site. Identification and analysis of structural systems for medium-scaled buildings. Assignments (eg: exercises, essays, class presentations), equivalent to not more than 5,000 words, and one examination of up to 2 hours (which could take the form of a class test). (Details, including the weighting of assessment, will be made available in the first 2 weeks of semester). Exercises may relate to work being undertaken in other subjects.
