The subject examines the relationship between construction methods and resources such as plant, equipment and labour. At the conclusion of Building Methods and Equipment students should:

• understand the characteristics of building plant and be able to specify the most satisfactory plant for particular building projects;
• understand the types and methods of underpinning;
• understand the types and application and safe limitations of hoisting systems;
• be able to plan temporary structures and services to building sites;
• appreciate the performance of building site safety regulations and recognise safe and unsafe practices.

Planning and equipment for site excavation. Types and methods of underpinning. Shoring to building excavations. Scaffolding. Temporary site structures. Temporary power. Plant. Cranes and their deployment. Selection and operation of compressors, electrical generators and motors for construction equipment. Safety and statutory regulation of construction plant. One 2-hour examination (40 per cent); written and drawn assignments equivalent to not more than 6,000 words (60 per cent).
