There are three first-year subjects. A pass in VCE or equivalent is assumed for Advanced German First Year. Intermediate German is designed for students with some prior knowledge of German. Beginners' German requires no prior knowledge of German. There is an additional first-year subject on Germany in the 20th century (Literature and Society in 20th-Century Germany), taught entirely in English and consisting of two independent semesters which may be taken as well as any German first-year subject.
The language stream or level in which a student enrols will be determined by the department. Placement will be based on the students' VCE results, other language study record or a placement test. However, their enrolment will remain provisional until confirmed or, alternatively, altered in the light of new evidence that might emerge during the first weeks of teaching. As far as possible, changes will be notified in the first two weeks of the semester. Changes in weeks 3 and 4 will have to be reported to the Associate Dean.
Pure Honours students enrol in 126-461 German Part 4 (Pure Honours) comprising 66.6 points of coursework, plus the 126-400 German Honours Thesis. Students undertaking Honours part-time enrol in 126-463 German Part 4 (Pure Honours Part A) (33.3 points of coursework), in the first year of study; and 126-464 German Part 4 (Pure Honours Part B) (33.3 points of coursework), plus 126-400 German Honours Thesis in the second year.
Combined Honours students enrol in 126-462 German Part 4 (Combined Honours) comprising 33.3 points of coursework, plus a thesis in either German or the combining department.
