Geography (Department of Geography and Environmental Studies)

Two majors are available in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies; one in Geography and the other in Environmental Studies. For the latter, see the entry in this Handbook under Environmental Studies. In addition, the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies offers pathways for students who wish to gain privileged entry into either a master of Urban Planning or Master of Landscape Architecture: see the entry in this Handbook under Planning and Design.

Requirements for a major

The normal prerequisite for a second or third year Geography subject is 25 points of Geography at first year level. In order to satisfy the requirements for a major in Geography, a student must complete a minimum of five 16.7 point 2nd or 3rd year subjects (83.3 points). A major in Geography must include at least four of the following subjects: 121-204/304 Development

121-214/314 Urban Geography: The Post-Modern City

121-217/317 Australia and the Pacific Rim

121-219/319 Environmental Politics and Management

121-220/320 Water Resources

121-234/334 Maritime and Seabed Resources

121-237/337 Social Geography: Gender, Ethnicity and Place

121-303 Development and Environment

121-336 Asian Development

121-340 Principles of Biogeography

121-341 Techniques in Biogeography

121-349 Principles of Environmental Hydrology 121-350 Techniques in Environmental Hydrology

The fifth subject in the major can include a subject from the list above or one of the following units: 121-201/301 Using Computers in Research

121-211/311 Cartography and Surveying

121-221/321 Urban Environments

121-230/330 Microcomputer Applications for Arts Students

121-231/331 Statistical Methods in the Social Sciences

121-342 Research Methods in Geography (Students who intend to complete honours in Geography must take this unit)

625-225 Introductory Climatology and Meteorology 200-201 Soil Resources

The major in Geography provides wide scope for students to choose subjects in which they are interested. Here are some suggested combinations of subjects (these are examples; they are not prescriptive):

1 For students wishing to specialise in physical geography, at least four of- 121-211/311 Cartography and Surveying

121-212/312 Geomorphology

121-213/313 Plants, People and Environments

121-220/320 Water Resources

121-340 Principles of Biogeography

121-341 Techniques in Biogeography

121-349 Principles of Environmental Hydrology

121-350 Techniques in Environmental Hydrology

(and possibly, with permission of the head of department, including one of 625-225, 200-201).

2 For students wishing to specialise in human geography, at least four of-

121-214/314 Urban Geography: The Post-Modern City

121-217/317 Australia and the Pacific Rim

121-234/334 Maritime and Seabed Resources

121-237/337 Social Geography: Gender, Ethnicity and Place

121-336 Asian Development Students may also wish to complete a double major in Geography by completing ten subjects from those listed above. Of these ten subjects, at least eight must come from the first list of subjects above and no more than two may be derived from the supplementary list of subjects above.

Entry to Honours

Students must have satisfied the requirements of the pass degree and completed a major in Geography including the pre-requisite subject 121-342 Research Methods in Geography., and achieved a minimum threshold average grade of H2B based on the five subjects which comprise the major in Geography.

Honours Requirements

Pure Honours students are required to complete Geography Honours Thesis 121-461 (50 points), Literature Review 121-462 (16.7 points), Philosophy and Scope of Geography 121-465 (16.7 points), and Advanced Coursework 121-464 (16.7 points).

Part-time Honours students will complete 121-462, 121-464, 121-465 in the first year, and 121-461 in the second year of their part-time Honours course.

Combined Honours students are expected to complete 121-461 and 121-462 (totalling 66.7); or 121-465 and 121-464 (totalling 33.3 points) if completing the thesis in the combining department.
