Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies)
The Department provides subjects in the history and theory of the Visual Arts including Cinema; in Materials and Techniques of Art; and in Museums and Connoisseurship. Not all subjects are offered each year, but the Department tries to offer, in alternate years, several of its subjects so that they may be taken at second or third-year level. These subjects are offered in two areas of study, Art History, and Cinema Studies. All Cinema Studies subjects are accepted as Art History subjects and can be taken as part of an Art History major. Students can also specialize in Cinema Studies. Cinema Studies subjects are listed under "Cinema Studies". Art History subjects and fourth year Cinema Studies subjects are listed below. The two areas of study are interrelated and the requirements for both are given below.
Requirements for a major:
A major in Art History consists of at least five subjects offered by the Department at second and third year level, totalling 83.3 points. At least one subject at either second or third year level must be chosen from those indicated by an asterisk (*).
Prerequisites
The prerequisite for a second semester first year Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies) subject is normally a first semester first year subject offered by the Fine Arts Department.
The prerequisite for a second or third year Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies) subject is normally 25 points in subjects offered by the Department at first year level.
The prerequisite for a subject offered at both third and fourth year levels in Fine Arts is normally 33 points at second/third year in Fine Arts subjects.
Entry to Honours:
Students intending to undertake Pure Honours are advised to take at least a major in Fine Arts. Up to 10 Fine Arts subjects (a total of 167 points) may be taken at second and third year. Students should note that fourth year Cinema Studies subjects have as a prerequisite at least one second or third year Cinema Studies subject, and fourth year Art History subjects have as a prerequisite at least two second or third year Art History subjects, excluding Cinema Studies.
Admission to fourth year honours is subject to completion of the requirements of a pass degree and must first be approved by the Head of Department. The prerequisite is normally a major in Fine Arts, with an average overall grade of at least H2B in the five subjects comprising the major.
Students enrol in four single-semester honours subjects, and 111-400 Fine Arts Honours Thesis, all in the Fine Arts Department.
Fine Arts Combined Honours
Two single-semester honours subjects in the Fine Arts Department (33.3 points), and 111-400 Fine Arts Honours Thesis, or a thesis or its equivalent in the other department according to the requirements of that department (33.3 points), and subjects in the other department according to the requirements of that department (33.3 points).
