English Language Studies (Interdepartmental Program)
Convenor: Nick Evans (Dept of Linguistics)
The Faculty of Arts offers an interdepartmental program in English Language Studies housed in the Department of Linguistics. The program offers students the opportunity to specialise in the study of the English language: the structure of its grammar, sound system and vocabulary, its historical development, its varieties, and its functions. Subjects in the major are taught by staff from the Departments of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and Language Studies, English, the Australia Centre and the English as a Second Language Program.
The English Language Studies Program may be undertaken as a major independently of any other studies. It would be a useful complement to studies in the English Department, the Linguistics Department, the Applied Linguistics and Language Studies Department or Australian Studies
On completion of this program, students should
- have a broad understanding of both the structure and history of English;
- have acquired a conceptual framework for describing and analysing English;
- be able to discuss basic concepts in language acquisition;
- have developed basic research and analytical skills to explore further problems in areas of English language studies.
Requirements of a major:
A major in English Language Studies consists of at least five subjects at second and third year level, totalling 83.3 points.
If a compulsory unit of the English Language Studies major is already being counted towards a student's major in another study area, a substitute subject will need to be selected from other elective subjects.
All subjects in the program are drawn from the current and planned offerings of the Departments of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics and Language Studies, English and of the English as a Second Language Program. Although the program assumes a good mastery of English, overseas students and local students of non-English speaking background who need to consolidate their proficiency in either spoken or written English may select up to two electives from the English as a Second Language Program.
The prerequisite for entry to the English Language Studies major is completion of the first year subject, 178-106 English: Its Structure and History (Department of Linguistics).
Although not required as prerequisites for entry to the major, the following first year subjects may be of interest to students intending to undertake the English Language Studies major:
- 106-102 Writing and Culture in Australia A (Sem.1) (Department of
English)
- 106-103 Writing and Culture in Australia B (Sem.2) (Department of
English)
- 178-108 Communication Across Cultures (Sem.1) (Department of
Linguistics)

- 183-123 Spoken Communication Skills (Sem.2) (ESL Program)
- 183-120 Advanced English as a Second Language A (Sem.1) (ESL
Program)

Each honours program has its own prerequisites and minimum standard requirements. For details of these requirements students should refer to the entry under the area of study concerned.
