Diploma in Modern Languages
From 1995, The Faculty of Arts will offer a concurrent Diploma in Modern Languages to students undertaking courses in faculties other than Arts. The aim of the Diploma is to facilitate language study in all undergraduate degree courses offered at the University.
At the completion of the Diploma in Modern Languages, students should:
- have acquired a mastery of both oral/aural and writing/reading skills similar to that of a student majoring in a language discipline;
- have gained a basic understanding of selected aspects of the culture (or cultures) and of the society (or societies) associated with the language.
The Diploma in Modern Languages will only be available to students who have accepted an offer of a place or who are re-enrolling in an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne. Entry to the diploma requires the approval of both the Faculty of Arts and the students' home Faculty.
The Diploma will normally add one year to the duration of the student's main degree course, and will consist of a three-year sequence of study in one language (six single-semester subjects, totalling a minimum of 100 points). Language subjects will be taken concurrently with an undergraduate degree in a sequence approved by the student's home faculty and the language department.
The Diploma will be available to students with no prior knowledge of a language as well as those who have completed several years of study of the language. In some cases, Intensive Summer Courses may be undertaken as part of the Diploma. The language stream or level in which a student enrols will be determined by the department; based on the students' VCE results, other language study record or a placement test.
The following languages and streams are available:
- Arabic (Beginners' and post-VCE Arabic)
- Chinese (Beginners' and non-dialect speakers with VCE Chinese)
- French (Beginners' and post-VCE French)
- German (Beginners', post-VCE German, and Year 11 German or equivalent)
- Modern Greek (Beginners', Intermediate, post-VCE Greek and more advanced standing)
- Hebrew (Beginners' and post-VCE Hebrew)
- Indonesian (Beginners' and post-VCE Indonesian)
- Italian (Beginners' and post-VCE Italian)
- Japanese (Beginners', post-VCE Japanese, and more advanced standing)
- Russian (Beginners' and post-VCE Russian)
- Swedish (Beginners')
