Criminology
Requirements for a major:
A major in Criminology consists of at least five subjects taken at second or third year level, totalling 83.3 points. The normal prerequisite for entry to subjects available at second and third-year level is successful completion of 25 points of Criminology at first-year level. The normal prerequisite for entry to subjects available at third-year level entry is a pass in at least two second-year level Criminology subjects. However, in exceptional circumstances, exemption from these prerequisites may be granted by the Head of Department.
Entry to Fourth-year Honours
Admission to the honours school of Criminology takes place at fourth-year level after three preliminary years of study. Admission to the honours school requires the completion of all the requirements for the BA pass degree; the satisfactory completion of a major in Criminology including the subjects 191-202/302 Crime, Criminal Behaviour and Society and 191-203/303 Introduction to Research Methods; achievement of an average H2A standard over the five subjects of the major and completion of a satisfactory thesis proposal. The requirement to complete 191-203/303 may be waived on application from students who produce evidence of having satisfactorily completed an equivalent research methods course in another discipline, or another course.

- A single-semester fourth-year subject 16.7
- 191-423 Supervised Field Study 16.7
- 191-441 Criminology Honours Thesis 33.3
- 191-442 Criminology Research Seminar 33.3
Combined Honours
- For students not completing the thesis in Criminology:
- A single-semester fourth-year subject 16.7
- 191-423 Supervised Field Study 16.7
- For students completing the thesis in Criminology:
- 191-441 Criminology Honours Thesis 33.3
- 191-443 Criminology Research Seminar 33.3
Students undertaking Pure Honours part-time would normally take the Supervised Field Study and the fourth-year subject in the first year and the thesis and research seminar in the second.
