Cinema Studies (Dept of Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies))

The Department of Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies), offers subjects in two interrelated areas of study: Art History and Cinema Studies. Cinema Studies subjects available at first, second and third year levels are listed below. Not all subjects are offered each year, but the Department tries to offer, in alternate years, several of its subjects so that they may be taken at second or third year level.

Requirements for a major:

A major in Cinema Studies consists of five subjects at second and third year level, totalling 83.3 points. For the several requirements of a Pass major in the Department of Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies), refer to entry under Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies)

Entry to Honours:

The Department of Fine Arts (Art History and Cinema Studies) offers two programs in Cinema Studies leading to the Honours Fourth Year; either Cinema Studies combined with Art History or Cinema Studies combined with English. Admission to fourth year honours is subject to the completion of the requirements of a pass degree and must first be approved by the Head of Department.

Cinema Studies and Art History

The prerequisite for entry into this combination is normally a major in Art History excluding Cinema Studies with an overall average grade of at least H2B in five subjects comprising the major, together with an overall average grade of at least H2B in the five subjects at second and third year which comprise the Cinema Studies major.

Honours Requirements: Two single-semester Cinema Studies honours subjects (33.3 points), two single-semester Art History honours subjects (33.3 points) and a thesis of 12,000 words in either Cinema Studies or Art History (33.3 points).

Cinema Studies and English

The prerequisite for entry into this combination is normally an average overall grade of at least H2B in five Cinema Studies subjects at second and third year and satisfactory completion of the prerequisites for entry to Honours in English: completion of a major in English (including 106-300 Research Essay A or 106-399 Research Essay B) with an average grade of H2A or higher.

Honours Requirements: Two single-semester Cinema studies honours subjects (33.3 points), two single-semester English honours subjects (33.3 points) and a thesis of 12,000 words in either Cinema Studies or English (33.3 points).
