Statute 2.5 - Provost, Deputy Vice-Chancellors And Pro-Vice-Chancellors

Appointment of the provost

2.5.1 (1) The Council may appoint a provost on such terms and conditions as it determines who, in cooperation with the vice-chancellor to whom the provost reports, is responsible for the academic affairs of the University.

(2) The provost is the senior academic officer of the University and, during tenure as provost, is also a deputy vice-chancellor

Duties and powers of the provost

2.5.2 (1) The provost must:

  1. coordinate and superintend the academic and related programs and student services across the University in accordance with the policies of the Board and of the Council;
  2. provide leadership to deans so as to foster collaboration and to promote congruence of the activities of faculties and graduate schools with the goals of the University;
  3. collaborate with the senior vice-principal so as to ensure their respective roles and administrative responsibilities are performed in coordination;
  4. except where otherwise provided by the vice-chancellor or Council in relation to a specified period, act as vice-chancellor when a vacancy occurs in the office of vice-chancellor or the vice-chancellor is unable to perform the duties of the office by reason of ill health or absence from the University.

Appointment of deputy vice-chancellors

2.5.3 (1) Council may appoint one or more deputy vice-chancellors

(2) Subject to these statutes, an appointment of a deputy vice-chancellor is to be made for such period and on such conditions as Council determines.

Duties and powers of deputy vice-chancellors

2.5.4 (1) Subject to the Act and the statutes, a deputy vice-chancellor by virtue of the office may attend and speak at any meeting of a Council committee and is a member of all other bodies of the University and has such duties and powers as are prescribed by the statutes or as are conferred upon or delegated to the deputy vice-chancellor by Council or, with the approval of Council, by the vice-chancellor.

(2) In connection with any matter relating to the performance of the duties of the office, a deputy vice-chancellor may-

  1. obtain from any body of the University or member of staff of the University any information required;
  2. call meetings of deans, heads of department or any other members of staff to seek their advice; and
  3. have access at any time to the books, accounts and records of the University.

Appointment of pro-vice-chancellors

2.5.5 (1) Council may appoint annually-

  1. a pro-vice-chancellor, who is the president of the Board; and
  2. another pro-vice-chancellor, who is the vice-president of the Board.

2.5.5 (2) Council may appoint other pro-vice-chancellors for such periods of up to five years as it deems appropriate. Such pro-vice-chancellors will have designated areas of responsibility as determined by Council.

Duties of pro-vice-chancellors

2.5.6 The pro-vice-chancellors must perform any duties required of them by the vice-chancellor in relation to the academic affairs of the University.
