Statute 12.7 - Admission to Degrees Without Examination and Admission to Honorary Degrees

Degree of master without examination

12.7.1 The Council may on the recommendation of the Board, and after receiving advice from a committee designated by the Council for that purpose, admit without assessment to the degree of master pertaining to a faculty any person of appropriate academic standing who is or has been a member of staff of the University and who has been proposed to the Council by more than half of the members of the faculty.

Honorary degree of doctor

12.7.2 The Council may on the recommendation of the Board admit to any honorary degree of doctor any person, whether or not the person has graduated at a university, who is proposed for such admission by the faculty in which the degree is to be conferred as being a person of probity and distinguished eminence in some branch of learning proper to that faculty. Such a proposal is approved by the faculty if not less than forty per cent of faculty members vote on the proposal and it is supported by at least seventy-five percent of the votes cast.

Honorary degree of doctor of Laws1

12.7.3 The Council may admit to the honorary degree of doctor of Laws any person, whether or not the person has graduated at a university, who has been proposed to the Council by the Board in accordance with rules made by the Board as being a person of probity and distinguished by eminent public service or outstanding cultural achievement. Such a proposal is approved by the Board if not less than forty per cent of Board members vote on the proposal and it is supported by at least seventy-five per cent of the votes cast.

Fees not payable

12.7.4 No fees are payable for admission to any degree under the provisions of this statute.

Presentation of candidates

12.7.5 (1) A candidate for admission to a degree under section 12.7.1 or 12.7.2 is to be presented at a conferring ceremony by the dean of the faculty to which the degree pertains and the grounds for awarding a degree under section 12.7.2 shall first be cited by the dean.

(2) A candidate for admission to a degree under section 12.7.3 is to be presented at a conferring ceremony by the president of the Board who cites the grounds for admission.

(3) Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in this section an honorary degree may be conferred in the absence of the candidate or posthumously by resolution of the Council.

Absence of dean or president of the Board

12.7.6 In the absence of a dean or the president of the Board their duties under this statute devolve in accordance with section 5 of Statute 12.6.
