Interpretation
12.2.1 In this statute, unless the contrary intention appears-
"assessment" means the method of determining-
- whether a student has passed; or
- whether a student has otherwise satisfied the examiners; or
- the grade to be awarded to a student in a degree course;
"degree course" includes any subject, Year, part of course or course for a degree or diploma or any preliminary course or part of any preliminary course;
"examiner" means an examiner appointed or designated under Statute 12.1 but does not include an assistant marker;
"examination board" means an examination board established under Statute 12.1;
"grade" includes honour or class of honour in a course;
"preliminary course" means a course of study prescribed as preliminary to a course for a master's degree or doctor's degree;
"student" means any person enrolled in a course under Statute 11.2 or 11.3;
"subject" includes any self-contained unit of a subject.
Components of assessment
12.2.2 (1) The components of assessment may include-
- any examination, essay, test, exercise, article, thesis or other requirement prescribed in the details of subjects or determined by an examination board under section 3 of Statute 12.3; and
- any additional assessment administered by an examination board under section 3 of Statute 12.4.
(2) Components of assessment may be administered in any form and subject to any conditions specified in the details of subjects or determined by the appropriate examination board.
Matters excluded from assessment
12.2.3 (1) Subject to section 12.2.9, in the assessment of any student, no account is to be taken of anything done by the student in connection with the degree course which is not prescribed in the details of subjects or determined by the examination board as being a component of assessment.
(2) Without limiting its generality, sub-section (1) applies to any degree course in which the student is required or permitted by regulation to-
- attend any class; or
- submit any written work; or
- perform or undertake any practical, laboratory, field or clinical work; or
- undertake any test or examination.
Requirements of assessment not prescribed
12.2.4 If assessment for any subject is not prescribed or determined in accordance with section 12.2.2, the assessment is to consist of one three hour formal written examination paper under supervision during the annual examination period.
Assessment in a subject to comprise all components
12.2.5 (1) Unless otherwise decided by the appropriate faculty, assessment in a subject is to comprise assessment in all of the components of assessment prescribed for the subject under section 12.2.2 including any additional assessment under Statute 12.4
(2) Sub-section (1) applies, the necessary changes being made, to the components of assessment for a degree course assessed as a whole.
Eligibility for assessment
12.2.6 Every student enrolled in a degree course is eligible for assessment unless the student has been excluded from assessment under section 12.2.8 or 12.2.9 or under the provisions of any other statute.
Management and supervision of assessment
12.2.7 (1) Subject to this chapter, the academic registrar is responsible for the management and supervision of-
- every component of assessment which consists of a formal supervised written examination; and
- any other component of assessment not delegated by the academic registrar to the chairperson of the examination board under sub-section (2).
(2) Subject to this chapter the academic registrar may delegate to the chairperson of the examination board, subject to any conditions specified in writing by the academic registrar, responsibility for the management and supervision of any components of assessment other than formal supervised written examinations, as are agreed between the academic registrar and the chairperson of the examination board.
Exclusion from assessment - by the academic registrar
12.2.8 (1) The academic registrar may direct that a student be excluded from attempting any component of assessment or that the results obtained by the student in any assessment or component of assessment be withheld, if the student-
- has not paid all fees or charges owed by him or her to the University; or
- has not paid all fines or other penalties imposed on him or her under Chapter 13 of the statutes; or
- has failed to comply with any requirement of this chapter.
(2) The academic registrar must inform the dean of the appropriate faculty of any directions given by the academic registrar under sub-section (1).
Exclusion from assessment - by a faculty
12.2.9 (1) If a student fails to-
- attend any class; or
- submit any written works; or
- perform any practical, laboratory, field or clinical work required by any statute or regulation, the appropriate faculty may, after giving the student an opportunity to be heard by the faculty or a committee appointed by the faculty for the purpose, resolve-
- that the student be excluded from attempting any component of assessment; or
- that the student be permitted to attempt a component of assessment subject to any conditions the faculty thinks fit.
(2) Sub-section (1) applies whether or not the attendance at the class or submission or performance of the work forms a component or part of a component of assessment.
Regulations and directions governing assessment1
12.2.10 (1) Subject to this statute, the Council may, on the recommendation of the Board, make regulations governing-
- the conduct of students in relation to assessment; and
- the powers of supervisors in relation to any component of assessment performed under supervision.
(2) The management and supervision of assessment is to be carried out in accordance with directions given by the academic registrar.
Board may decide disputes
12.2.11 (1) The Board may decide any dispute or question arising under this chapter other than a decision by an examiner or examination board in relation to the academic performance of a student in any component of assessment which is based solely on academic judgement.
(2) A quorum of the Board for the purposes of this section is three members.
(3) The procedure for resolution of disputes or questions is to be determined by the Board and published by the academic registrar, from time to time, in a form readily accessible to students.
Special provisions
12.2.12 The Board may, by resolution, make special arrangements with respect to specific classes of students.
