Regulation 7.1.R2 - Academic and Professional Staff Ranks and Titles

Council may designate academic ranks

1. The Council may determine academic ranks, titles and salary grades and determine standards for appointment to those ranks. Academic titles include those of tutor, research assistant, lecturer, research fellow, senior lecturer, senior research fellow, associate professor, reader, principal research fellow, principal lecturer, associate professor and reader, professor, professorial fellow.

Council may designate Professional staff classifications and salary grades

2. The Council may determine professional staff ranks and titles and determine standards for appointment to classifications and salary grades.

Appointment of professors and professorial fellows

3. Council may appoint professors and professorial fellows under the following subsections:
   
   
   1. to the numbered chairs listed in Schedule A to this regulation and to the chairs listed in Schedule B to this regulation where special arrangements exist.
      

   Chairs listed in Schedule A may be advertised either as full-time, part-time or for a fixed term as determined by agreement between the dean of the faculty to which the chair belongs and the office of the vice-chancellor; or

   2. by other means as determined by Council from time to time; or
      
   3. by promotion of a member of staff to the level of professor or professorial fellow under policies and procedures determined by Council from time to time.

Appointment of certain officers as professors

4. (1) The Council may appoint as a professor-
   1. a person appointed as vice-chancellor;
   2. a person appointed as deputy vice-chancellor;
   3. a person appointed as dean of a faculty under section 1 of Statute 5.3 and the person appointed as the dean of Graduate Studies under section 4 of Statute 5.2;
   4. a person appointed to an office for which Council has determined the title of professor may be used.

   (2) Unless the Council decides otherwise, an appointment as a professor under this section expires when the person so appointed ceases to hold the office in respect of which the appointment is made.

(3) In special circumstances the Council may by regulation-

1. determine that a person appointed as a professor under this section, who ceases to hold the office in respect of which the appointment was made, may remain a professor of the University; and
2. specify the conditions on which the person is to remain a professor.

(4) Where a staff member is appointed as a professorial fellow, where the Council deems it appropriate, the title may also include the name of any donor or sponsor.

Appointment of readers

5. Council may appoint certain academic staff as readers under the following subsections:
   1. appoint to a vacant position;
   2. appoint through other means as determined by Council from time to time;
   3. promote to the level of reader under policies and procedures determined by Council from time to time.

Adoption of titles: reader and associate professor

6. Persons appointed as readers, or those appointed as principal research fellows may elect to take the title of reader or associate professor, or may elect to use both titles.

Appointment of certain officers as associate professors

7. (1) The Council may appoint as an associate professor any person who has not already been appointed as a professor under section 4 of this regulation and who-
   1. is appointed head of a department under section 2 of Statute 6.1 whose department is nominated by the Council as a department to which this section applies; or
   2. is appointed head of a school under section 6 of Statute 6.1 whose school is nominated by the Council as a school to which this section applies; or
   3. is appointed a clinical dean in the faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science

   (2) An appointment under this section expires when the person so appointed ceases to hold the position in respect of which the appointment was made;

(3) Persons appointed as associate professors retain their substantive appointments to which they revert when the appointment under this section expires;

(4) Associate professors may, during their appointment under this section, take the title of their respective substantive appointment while they are engaged in activity specifically related to that substantive appointment.

Other appointments as associate professor

8. The Council may-
   1. declare a class of persons to be associate professors, with or without the addition of a reference to a substantive appointment, whether in substitution of another title or not; or
   2. declare a person to be an associate professor in order to use the title in certain circumstances of special academic duty; or
   3. promote a member of staff to the level of associate professor under policies and procedures determined by it from time to time.
