R7.20 - Research Professorship in Medical Biology

Recitals-

  1. By an agreement made on 14 July 1964 between the trustees for the time being of the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust of the first part, The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (therein and hereinafter referred to as "the institute") of the second part, The University of Melbourne of the third part and The Royal Melbourne Hospital of the fourth part (which said agreement was supplementary to certain previous agreements and is hereinafter referred to as "the said agreement") the parties thereto entered into certain arrangements concerning (inter alia) the appointment of a director of the institute in manner therein provided.
  2. The agreement was expressed to have effect from 30 September 1964 and to continue thereafter for a period of 40 years subject however to prior determination as therein mentioned.
  3. The agreement provided that whenever the person who is for the time being the director of the institute should for any reason cease or be about to cease to be such director steps should be taken to appoint a successor after consultation between the institute and the University as therein provided.
  4. The parties entered into a supplementary agreement dated 23 August 1977 whereby the financial arrangements between the University and the institute relating to the appointment of the director as a professor were varied.

It is provided as follows-

  1. The Council may from time to time as the need arises appoint the director of the institute to be research professor in Medical Biology.
  2. The professor holds this appointment for so long as he or she continues to be director of the institute.
  3. The professor is responsible for the conduct of a University department of Medical Biology within the institute and must engage in such undergraduate and post-graduate teaching as may be agreed between the institute and the Council.
  4. The Council may appoint any other qualified officer of the institute to be a research professor of some branch of Medicine in the University or to hold some other office within the University which it thinks proper.
  5. During the professor's appointment as director of the institute the Council must pay annually to the institute by way of contribution from 1 January 1977-
    1. towards the salary of the director of the institute an annual sum equal to half of the basic salary of a professor of the University calculated at 1 January in the year to which each annual payment relates; and
    2. towards the cost of the institute's work on medical research such sum as the University from time to time allocates from its available research funds.
  6. This regulation remains in force only during the operation of the said agreement.
