On 21 January 2005, Mr Adrian Newton of 3 Lebanon Street, Strathmore, Victoria, donated the sum of $15,000 to establish the Dr Sue Newton Scholarship in memory of his wife who died on 12 March 2003.
- Dr Sue Newton, BSc (Hons) ANU PhD ANU was a postdoctoral research fellow at Wellcome Biotechnology in the United Kingdom, senior research scientist with Pitman-Moore in Melbourne, senior research fellow at the Centre for Animal Biotechnology at the University of Melbourne and later head of the Molecular Vaccines Department, Victorian Institute of Animal Science. In 2001 Dr Newton was awarded The Agriculture Victoria Executive Award for Leadership.
- The Scholarship is to reward scientific achievement by assisting postgraduate students in the faculty of Veterinary Science to travel overseas to present their research at international conferences or to gain experience in research laboratories.
- It is intended that the fund will be augmented by donations from family, friends and colleagues of Dr Newton. Mr Newton will augment the income each year to ensure that not less than $5,000 is available for the scholarship.
- At 25 May 2005 the University had received the sum of $15,000 towards the fund.
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $15,000 and any accumulations and additions to the fund are to form a fund to be called ‘The Dr Sue Newton Scholarship Fund’ (‘the fund’) and the fund must be placed into an investment pool and remain there until Council directs otherwise.
- The net annual income of the fund is to be used to provide The Dr Sue Newton Scholarship (‘the scholarship’) awarded annually to a student enrolled in the course for the degree doctor of Philosophy in the faculty of Veterinary Science. Preference may be given to candidates undertaking research aligned to the fields of parasitology, microchemistry, molecular biology or innovation in science with an emphasis on fundamental science.
- The scholarship is to enable the recipient to travel either to present his or her research at an international conference which may include visiting a laboratory, or to gain experience overseas in a laboratory conducting research in veterinary science. The international conference may be in Australia or overseas.
- The scholarship is to be awarded by Council on the recommendation of the Veterinary Research and Graduate Studies Committee (‘the committee’).
- Candidates must provide a description of the purpose to which he or she will apply the scholarship and an estimate of the cost.
- The value of each scholarship is to be determined by the committee. Any surplus income in any year must be retained as income and be available to provide an additional scholarship or scholarships in any subsequent year.
- Recipients of the scholarship must provide a written report to the committee not later than three months after their return.
- If at any time Council believes that it is impractical or impossible to apply the fund for the purposes prescribed in section 3, Council may apply the income of the fund and, where necessary the capital, for such other purpose or purposes as are in its opinion most closely in accordance with the wishes of the donors and which continues to commemorate Dr Sue Newton.
