R6.63 DAVID GRANT PRIZE

Recitals-

  1. Lilian Edith Grant, of 364 Toorak Road south Yarra, Victoria, who died on 20 October 1941, widow of David Grant Master of Arts in the University of Edinburgh and Doctor of Medicine in the Universities of Edinburgh and Melbourne medical practitioner of Melbourne bequeathed to the Council of the University the sum of £2,000

    'In trust to be invested in any investments for the time being authorized by law of the State of Victoria for the investment of trust funds and the yearly income therefrom to be applied for the purpose of providing a Scholarship to be called the David Grant Scholarship and a bronze medal suitably inscribed so as to identify the donor and the winner of such Scholarship to be awarded annually to the candidate who in the opinion of the examiners of candidates for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine of the said University most distinguishes himself or herself in part II of the examination for the said Degree.'

  2. The University received the sum of £2,000 in satisfaction of the bequest, which sum increased to $34,049 at 31 December 1994.

  3. On 24 March 2003 the Supreme Court of Victoria made an Order that the scholarship be renamed a prize and be awarded annually to the candidate who, in the opinion of the examiners, submits the best thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medicine.

  4. At 31 December 2002 the capital was $113,796.27 and the cash balance was $37,257.44.

It is provided as follows-

  1. The sum of $113,796.27 and any accumulations and additions to the fund forms a fund called the 'David Grant Scholarship' ('the fund') and the fund must be paid into an investment pool and remain there until the Council directs otherwise.

  2. The prize is awarded annually to the candidate who, in the opinion of the examiners submits the best thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medicine.

  3. (a) The prize is awarded by joint conference of the examiners in relation to all the theses submitted in the year of the award.

    (b) The examiners must appoint one of their number to act as chairperson and he or she has both a deliberative and, where necessary, a casting vote.

  4. There is to be provided from the income of the fund and awarded to the winner of the prize a bronze medal suitably inscribed so as to identify the donor and the winner of the prize.

  5. The amount of the prize is the net income of the fund in the preceding year.
