R6.50 - RANDAL AND LOUISA ALCOCK SCHOLARSHIPS

Recitals-

  1. Randal James Alcock ("the testator") late of Kooyongkoot Road, Hawthorn, who died on 17 May 1927, by his will bequeathed to the University the sum of £2,000-

    "To be invested by the University and the income thereof applied as a Scholarship or Scholarships to be called the Randal and Louisa Alcock Scholarships for research into the causes, prevention and cure of diseases in human beings on such terms and conditions as the University may determine.".

    The University received £2,084 18s. 8d. in satisfaction of the bequest.

  2. The testator also bequeathed an annuity of one hundred pounds each year for a period of fifty years commencing on the death of his wife, which occurred in 1934, at the end of which period the University was to receive -

    "Five thousand pounds the income of which is to be applied by the Council of the University in providing scholarships to be called the Randal and Louisa Alcock Scholarships for research or such other subjects as the said Council may think fit."

    The University received $10,081.10 in satisfaction of the bequest.

  3. The bequest received in 1984 was added to the existing Randal and Louisa Alcock Scholarships fund.

  4. The fund had increased to $36,030 by 1 September 2000.

It is provided as follows-

  1. The sum of $36,030 and any accumulations and additions to the sum forms a fund called the "Randal and Louisa Alcock Scholarships" ("the fund") and the fund must be paid into an investment pool and remain there until the Council directs otherwise.

  2. The amount of the scholarship or scholarships awarded in any year must not exceed in value the net income of the fund.

  3. The scholarships are open for award to candidates approved by the faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Services ("the faculty") who intend to undertake research into the causes, prevention and cure of human disease.

  4. The scholarships are awarded by the Council on the recommendation of the dean of the faculty.
