R6.49 - THE JAMES CUMING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Recitals-
- A sum of money was subscribed by members of
the Victorian Chamber of Manufactures ('the Chamber'), to provide
a memorial to James Cuming, late Chairman of Directors of Messrs.
Cuming Smith and Co. Pty. Ltd., and formerly president of the Chamber.
- It was determined by the subscribers that two
scholarships be established in the University for the encouragement
of the study of Chemistry in its higher branches and to enable promising
students to continue their studies after completing courses for the
degree of bachelor of Science.
- The sum of £2,028.11s.10d. was donated
to Council for the establishment of the scholarships, which capital
sum had increased to $10,367.17 with accumulated income of $1,186.05
at 31 December 2003.
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $10,367.17 and any accumulations and
additions to the sum is to form a fund called the 'James Cuming Memorial
Scholarships' ('the fund') and the fund must be paid into an investment
pool and remain there until Council directs otherwise.
- The conjoint value of the scholarships is to
be equal to the net annual income of the fund. One scholarship is
to be of the value of three-fifths of such income and the other of
the value of the remaining two-fifths, but should two candidates be
equal in merit the scholarship is to be divided equally.
- The scholarships are to be open to candidates
completing the final Year of the course for the degree of bachelor
of Science and must be awarded on the assessments in Chemistry of
that Year.
- The scholarships are to be tenable in the department
of Chemistry of the University on condition that the holders devote
themselves to advanced studies or research work in Chemistry in preparation
for the degree of master of Science.
