R6.35 - THE HENRY GYLES TURNER SCHOLARSHIP
Recitals-
- Henry Gyles Turner late of Melbourne by his will bequeathed to the
University the sum of £1,000 to be held upon trust to invest the same
at the discretion of Council and to apply the annual income arising
therefrom for providing a scholarship or prize or such other form
of reward as the said Council may determine to be most suitable for
encouraging the scientific study of Agriculture.
- The sum of £1,000 increased to $11,025 at 31 December 1994.
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $11,025 and any accumulations and additions to the sum
forms the endowment of a scholarship called the 'Henry Gyles Turner
Scholarship' ('the fund') and the fund must be paid into an investment
pool and remain there until Council directs otherwise.
- The scholarship is tenable for one year and may be awarded to more
than one student in any one year.
- (1) Applications for the scholarship are invited from postgraduate
students studying for a higher degree in Agriculture in the Faculty
of Land and Food Resources ('the faculty') who are not in receipt
of a Commonwealth Postgraduate Award. Applications should state the
income and commitments of the student and any requirements for his
or her research programme for which no financial provision has been
made.
(2) The value of the award is determined by the dean of the
faculty ('the dean') having regard to the financial need of the student
but must not, when taken in sum with other scholarship moneys received
by the student, exceed the relevant maximum for a Commonwealth Postgraduate
Award. The value of all awards so made must not in any one year exceed
the sum of the unexpended income of the three preceding years and
the net income of the fund for that year.
- On the occasion of each award Council, on the recommendation
of the dean determines the terms on which the amount of the scholarship
is to be paid and the conditions to apply to its award.
- If in any year, in the opinion of the dean, there is no suitable
candidate for the award of the scholarship then Council may, on
the recommendation of the dean, award one or more travelling scholarships.
These travelling scholarships are open to postgraduate students studying
for a higher degree in Agriculture in the faculty who wish to visit
research institutions. Council, on the recommendation of the dean,
determines the value of each travelling scholarship and the conditions
which attach to its award
