R6.29 - JOHN BAIRD BURSARY
Recitals-
- Mrs. Jessie Alexander Baird Currie of Malvern in the State of Victoria
presented to the University the sum of £600 for the purpose of founding
a bursary in memory of her late brother John Baird Esquire of Bendigo
such bursary to be awarded to a student pursuing the course for the
degrees of bachelor of Medicine and bachelor of Surgery in the University.
- The founder expressed the desire that in making the award the financial
position of the student should be taken into account so that the bursary
may assist a student who would otherwise be deprived of all the advantages
of a University training.
- The University received £600 at the time of the donation, which
sum increased to $2,720 at 31 December 1994.
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $2,720 and any accumulations or additions to the sum
forms the endowment of a bursary called the 'John Baird Bursary' ('the
fund') and the fund must be invested as the Council from time to time
directs.
- 2. The value of the bursary is two-thirds of the net annual income
in each year immediately preceding the date of payment to the bursary
winner.
- The ordinary tenure of the bursary is five years but the tenure
may be extended for a further period not exceeding one year if the
Council thinks fit.
- If the bursary be awarded to a candidate who has already completed
part of the course for the degrees of bachelor of Medicine and bachelor
of Surgery the tenure terminates when the bursary-winner completes
the course but it must in no case exceed one year more than is required
by the University for the purpose.
- The bursary is to be awarded by the Council on the recommendation
of the Students Loan Fund and Bursaries Committee.
