R6.23 THE GEORGE LANSELL SCHOLARSHIP
Recitals-
- Mrs. Edith Lansell on 24 August, 1907 donated
the sum of £1,200 to the University to 'provide a scholarship
in Mining to the best advantage' to commemorate her late husband George
Lansell of Bendigo.

The faculty of Engineering has recommended that
the income from the endowment be applied towards the establishment
of a scholarship to be called the 'George Lansell Scholarship'.
- The sum of £1,200 increased to $35,500
at 31 December 1994.
- On 18 November 2003 the Supreme Court made an
Order that-
'The funds comprising the George Lansell Scholarship be applied to
provide a scholarship for research in a field relating to mining including,
without limitation, mining or mining related subjects taught by the
University of Melbourne Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering,
Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Department
of Geomatics, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and
School of Earth Sciences or any Department of the University that
may in the future offer subjects relevant to mining in addition to
or in substitution for the Department referred to above.'
It is provided as follows -
- The sum of $35,500 and any accumulations and
additions to the sum forms the endowment of a scholarship called the
'George Lansell Scholarship' ('the fund') and the fund must be invested
as Council from time to time determines.
- The net income of the fund is to be applied to
providing 'The George Lansell Scholarship'.

The scholarship is to be awarded annually by
Council on the recommendation of the dean of the faculty of Engineering.
- The scholarship is to be awarded to a student
enrolled in a higher degree by research who is undertaking research
in a field related to mining in the department of Mechanical and Manufacturing
Engineering, the department of Geomatics, the department of Civil
and Environmental Engineering, the school of Earth Sciences or any
other department of the University that may offer subjects relevant
to mining and may be awarded as a travelling scholarship.
- The scholarship is to be awarded for a term
of one year and may be re-awarded for a further term not exceeding
one year.
- The value of the scholarship is to be the net
annual income of the fund.
