R6.16 - H.B. HIGGINS SCHOLARSHIP
Recitals-
- The Honourable Henry Bournes Higgins K.C. master of Arts and bachelor
of Laws and a member of the Council of the University on 25 October
1904 presented to the University £1000 of Victorian Government Stock
for the purpose of founding in the University a scholarship for the
study of poetry.
- The donation of £1,000 increased to $19,332 at 31 December 1994.
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $19,332 and any accumulations and additions to the sum
forms the endowment of a scholarship called 'The H.B. Higgins Scholarship
for the Study of Poetry' ('the fund') and the fund must be paid into
an investment pool and remain there until the Council directs otherwise.
- The scholarship is awarded by the Council on the recommendation
of the dean of the faculty of Arts ('the dean').
- The scholarship is open for award to bachelors of Arts of not more
than two years' standing on the first day of March of the year in
which the award is made.
- (1) The value of each scholarship and the conditions on
which it may be held are those determined from time to time by the
Council on the advice of the dean who in giving such advice must have
regard to the value of the net annual income of the fund.
(2) Each scholarship is to be awarded in the first instance
for a period not exceeding 12 months but may be renewed on the recommendation
of the dean for a further period not exceeding 12 months.
- (1) A scholarship holder must during the tenure of the scholarship
undertake advanced studies of poetry in any language as may be approved
by the dean from time to time.
(2) A scholar may undertake such advanced studies in Australia
or in other countries at institutions which are approved by the dean
for the purpose.
