R6.15 - THE WRIGHT PRIZES
Recitals-
- Robert Alexander Wright by his last will and
testament bequeathed to the University the sum of £1,000 to
be invested for the purpose of applying two thirds of the income thereof
annually as a reward for proficiency in Mechanical Engineering and
Carpentering and for the purpose of applying one third part thereof
as a reward for proficiency in Instrumental Music or of applying the
whole of the income for proficiency in such other branches of learning
and in such proportions as the governing body of the University from
time to time determines having regard to the direction aforesaid.
- The University received £1,000 from the
estate, which sum increased to $15,373 at 31 December 1994.
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $15,373 forms the endowment of four
annual prizes called the 'Wright Prizes' in Mechanical Engineering,
in Engineering Design, in Instrumental Music, and in Family Law respectively.
- The following prizes are to be awarded annually-
- The Wright Prize in Mechanical Engineering
awarded to the top student in the Second Year subject Thermofluids
1;

The Wright Prize in Engineering Design
awarded to the student who submits the best Design Project in
the Fourth Year subjects Engineering Design and Mechatronics
Design and Laboratory;

The Wright Prize in Instrumental Music awarded
for proficiency in a musical instrument approved by the dean
of the Faculty of Music at the assessment of the Second Year
for the degree of Bachelor of Music, or the Second Year of the
degree of Bachelor of Music Education; and
- The Wright Prize in Family Law awarded to
the top student at the honours assessment in that subject.
- The prizes are to be awarded by Council on the
recommendation of the dean of the relevant faculty.
- Each prize is to have the value of one quarter
of the net annual income of the fund.
