Recitals-
- Robert Dixson late of Melbourne and Adelaide by his last will and testament dated 7 February 1890 made a bequest to the University in the following terms-
‘And whereas I am desirous of the advancement of sound learning in the Sciences of Chemistry Experimental Physics Mathematics and Engineering. For effectuating such desire subject to the trusts hereinbefore declared and to the payment of two and half per centum to my Trustees on all moneys received by it and all the necessary legal and other incidental expenses of proving this my Will and realising and administering my Estate I bequeath the net residue of such proceeds and moneys to the University of Melbourne for the foundation of Scholarships in the said University in the subjects aforesaid to be called ‘The Dixson Scholarships’. And I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or Registrar for the time being of the said University shall be sufficient discharge to my Trustee for the said moneys so bequeathed to the said University. And I direct the Council of the said University for the time being in its discretion to invest the said moneys upon such securities as Trustees may by law invest trust moneys and from time to time to vary such investments. And to pay the annual income arising from such investments to the several holders for the time being of the said Dixson Scholarships I direct the said Scholarships to be awarded and given in such amounts for such course or courses of instruction and period and under such regulations and according to such schemes in all respects as shall from time to time be established prescribed or authorised by the Council for the time being of the said University.’
- The department of Mathematics is now the department of Mathematics and Statistics.
- The sum of £10,837 1s. 5d. was received by the Council of the University from the trustees of the will in satisfaction of the bequest and subject to the trusts expressed in the will.
- The sum of £10,837 1s. 5d. increased to $49,804 at 31 May 1998.
It is provided as follows-
- The sum of $49,804 and any accumulations and additions to the sum forms the endowment for four scholarships to be called ‘The Dixson Scholarship in Chemistry,’ ‘The Dixson Scholarship in Experimental Physics’, ‘The Dixson Scholarship in Mathematics’ and ‘The Dixson Scholarship in Engineering’ respectively (‘the fund’) and the fund must be paid into an investment pool and remain there until the Council directs otherwise.
- Each of the scholarships is of the value of one-quarter of the net annual income of the fund and is tenable for one year.
- Each of the scholarships is to be awarded by the Council on the recommendation of the heads of the schools of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics and Statistics and of the dean of the faculty of Engineering respectively.
