R6.7 - Wyselaskie Scholarships

Recitals-

  1. John Dickson Wyselaskie of Wickcliffe, Victoria who died on 4 May 1883 bequeathed the sum of twelve thousand pounds to the University to establish scholarships in Mathematics, Natural Science, English Constitutional History, Political Economy, Modern Languages and Classical and Comparative Philology and Logic on certain terms.
  2. At the request of the executors of the will the sum of £8,400 was accepted by the Council in satisfaction of the bequests and subject to the trusts expressed in the will.
  3. The University received £8,400 in satisfaction of the bequest, which sum increased to $85,514 at 31 December 1994.
  4. On 24 March 2003 the Supreme Court of Victoria made an order concerning the terms of the Wyselaskie Scholarships which had the effect of substituting-
    1. a scholarship for the subject ‘Modern British History’ in place of the scholarship for the subject of ‘English Constitutional History’;
    2. and a scholarship in the subject ‘Logic’ in place of the scholarship for the subject ‘Classical and Comparative Philology and Logic’.
  5. At 31 December 2002 the capital and accumulated income for each of the six scholarships was-

It is provided as follows-

  1. The

$72,744.70 for Logic,
$349,662.17 for History,
$41,257.73 for Mathematics,
$32,777.15 for Modern Languages,
$23,489.79 for Science, and
$10,552.00 for Economics

and any accumulations or additions to the sum forms a fund called the ‘Wyselaskie Scholarships’ (the fund) and the fund must be paid into an investment pool and remain there until be Council directs otherwise.

  1. A scholarship is awarded annually by Council on the recommendation of the dean of the relevant faculty in each of the following subjects
    1. Mathematics
    2. Natural Science
    3. Modern British History
    4. Political Economy
    5. Modern Languages
    6. Logic, provided that if in any year it is not possible to award this scholarship in this subject it may be awarded in some other field of philosophy

      and each scholarship is known as the Wyselaskie scholarship in the subject to which it relates.

  2. The tenure of each scholarship is the term, not exceeding four years, between the date of the last vacancy of such scholarship and the last day of November in the fifth year in which the successful candidate is enrolled for studies in the University.
  3. Each scholarship is awarded annually by Council on the recommendation of the dean of the relevant faculty (‘the faculty’) to the student awarded the highest mark in the scholarship subject in a year of the course determined by the faculty.
  4. The value of each scholarship is the net annual income of its endowment fund.
