The degrees, diplomas and certificates listed in this regulation may be conferred or granted by the Council. Where the award has a specialisation listed as a footnote, that specialisation is included on the testamur. Shown after the degree, diploma or certificate is the Regulation number. These Regulations are in Chapter 3 of the Regulations of Council, Volume 2.

1A. Nomenclature for Awards and Recognition

The following terminology must be used in connection with the conferring or granting of awards and recognition of the University:

  1. Degrees

    The correct terminology for degrees is:
    Bachelor of xxx
    Associate Degree of xxx
    Master of xxx
    Doctor of xxx

    Exceptions to this rule: Executive Master of Public Administration, Juris Doctor
  2. Diplomas and Certificates

    The correct terminology for diplomas and certificates is:
    Diploma in xxx or Associate/Advanced/Graduate/Postgraduate Diploma in xxx
    Certificate in xxx or Associate/Advanced/Graduate/Postgraduate/Professional/Specialist Certificate in xxx

    Exceptions to this rule: Concert Recital Diploma, VET awards
  3. Bachelor honours degrees
    1. Bachelor honours degrees for which an additional year of study is required are designated:
      Bachelor of xxx (Degree with Honours)
    2. Bachelor honours degrees for which no additional year of study is required are designated:
      Bachelor of xxx with Honours
  4. Masters honours degrees
    1. Masters honours degrees for which an additional year of study is required are designated:
      Master of xxx (Degree with Honours)
    2. Masters honours degrees for which no additional year of study is required are designated:
      Master of xxx with Honours
  5. The University of Melbourne as the Conferring Institution

    When the University is named as the conferring institution for a degree or other award in a person’s postnominals, it is correctly shown abbreviated and italicised as follows: Melb.
  6. Degrees and Awards by the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts

    When the course is conducted by the faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts, the name of the faculty is noted on the testamur following the notation of the degree or award.

  • courses listed in italics are those for which there will be no new first year intake from 2008
  • courses listed in italics underlined are those for which there will be no new intake from 2008
  • courses which have been re-named have been bolded and have the previous name indicated by "formerly..."
