R3.68 - Degree of Doctor of Applied Science

  1. A person may be a candidate for the degree of doctor of Applied Science who‑

    1. (i) is a graduate in Applied Science of not less than five years' standing; or

      (ii) is a graduate other than a graduate in Applied Science of not less than five years' standing.

      Provided that a person other than a graduate in Applied Science may be required by the faculty of Engineering ("the faculty") to submit evidence of training satisfactory to the faculty;

    2. has had association satisfactory to the faculty with industrial operations or a profession since obtaining qualifications satisfactory for the purpose of sub section (a) hereof;
    3. has made substantial published contributions to Applied Science; and
    4. has obtained the approval of the faculty for the subject of the work submitted

      An intending candidate must submit a record of his or her published scientific work, and the prescribed number of copies1 of all the work, whether published or unpublished, which is to be submitted for assessment.

      An intending candidate who is not a graduate of the faculty is required to have established a substantial association with the University as determined in each case by the faculty.
  2. (1) The work must be a substantial contribution to knowledge and must, in the opinion of the examiners, be evidence of the candidate's ability to apply scientific knowledge to industrial or community problems.

    (2) When the work submitted by a candidate has been undertaken in collaboration with others the candidate is required to submit a signed statement as to the extent of the candidate's own contribution to‑

    1. planning the work;
    2. carrying out the work; and
    3. writing the account of the work.

  3. (1) The faculty must appoint a committee to determine‑

    1. whether the subject matter of the work presented falls within the scope of Applied Science, and, if so
    2. whether in general terms the quality and quantity of the work presented justifies submitting the work to assessment.

(2) The faculty may appoint persons who are not members of the faculty to such committee

(3) If the committee decides that an examination is justified it must‑

  1. nominate examiners; and
  2. recommend to the faculty that the applicant be admitted to candidature for the degree.

(4) On the recommendation of the committee the faculty may admit the applicant to candidature for the degree and forward the names of the examiners to the Council for appointment.

(5) Subject to the statutes and regulations of the University, the faculty may give directions for the conduct of the assessment.

  1. A candidate who has fulfilled the requirements of this regulation and who has satisfied the examiners may be admitted to the degree of doctor of Applied Science.
