R3.57 - Degree of Doctor of Music

  1. (1) A person may be admitted to candidature for the degree of doctor of Music who -
    1. is a graduate in the faculty of Music (“the faculty”); or
    2. holds a degree, whether in this University or in any other university or tertiary educational institution, which degree is recognised by the faculty pursuant to Statute 11.1.6 as appropriate for the purposes of this regulation;

in every case of not less than five years' standing from first qualifying to graduate.

(2) A person must not be admitted to candidature pursuant to paragraph (b) of sub section (1) unless the person satisfies the faculty that he or she has attained an appropriate academic standing as a composer of music or as a scholar of music.

  1. Candidates may present themselves for assessment in either or both of two schools, namely
    1. Composition: an original work for orchestra with or without soloists, or for orchestra and chorus with or without soloists, or a series of works which together would constitute a major contribution to music;
    2. Theory, History and Aesthetics of Music: original essays or other evidence of original research.
  2. Candidates must satisfy the faculty as to their ability as composers in school (A) or as to their musical scholarship in school (B), or both before being assessed.
  3. For the purpose of the assessment of candidates under section 2, examiners must be nominated by the faculty, and candidates who have satisfied the examiners in either or both of the abovementioned schools and who have fulfilled the other conditions prescribed in this regulation may be admitted to the degree of doctor of Music.
