R3.36 - Degree of Doctor of Medicine

  1. A person may be a candidate for the degree of doctor of Medicine who-
    1. (i) is a graduate in Medicine and Surgery of the University of at least two years standing; or

      (ii) is a graduate in Medicine and Surgery of at least two years standing of another university recognised by the faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences ("the faculty") pursuant to Statute 11.1.6 as appropriate for the purposes of this regulation; and
    2. has obtained the consent of the faculty.
  2. Candidates must be enrolled and must engage in at least two years full-time or four years part-time advanced research in Medicine, save that graduates of the University only may, with the prior approval of the faculty, submit a thesis based predominantly on published work which is the outcome of at least two years full-time or four years part-time research.
  3. Every candidate must submit for assessment, a thesis or published work 1 the subject, scope and character of which have been approved by the faculty as appropriate for the purposes of this degree.
  4. A candidate must not submit for assessment work in respect of which a degree has been awarded in any university, or, without the permission of the faculty, work which has previously been presented for any such degree.
  5. If any of the work submitted was prepared in collaboration with another person, the candidate must state clearly and fully the nature and extent of that collaboration.
  6. All examiners of the thesis must be external examiners.
  7. The examiners must not certify that the candidate has satisfied the assessment unless they are satisfied that the work submitted forms a substantial and original contribution to medical knowledge.
  8. A candidate who has fulfilled the requirements of this regulation and who has satisfied the examiners may be admitted to the degree of doctor of Medicine.
