R12.6.R1 - Academic Dress

  1. Unless otherwise provided by Council, graduates and  undergraduates must appear in academic dress at public ceremonies of the University and on any other occasions the Council prescribes.

Academic dress for undergraduates

  1. The academic dress for undergraduates is a plain black stuff gown.

Academic dress for graduate diplomates

  1. The academic dress for graduate diplomates is the habit of their degrees.

Academic dress for members of the Council and members of staff of the University

  1. The academic dress for members of the Council, members of the academic staff, members of faculties and the administrative officers of the University is the habit of their degrees or a gown and trencher as for a master of Arts.

Hoods

  1. A hood referred to in this regulation is of the size and shape of the hood of the Oxford master of Arts.

Academic dress for bachelors

  1. The academic dress for bachelors is a plain black stuff bachelor's gown with a hood of black silk bound with white silk and lined with the colour of the faculty, school or professional grouping.

Academic dress for masters and juris doctor

  1. Academic dress for masters is a plain black stuff master's gown, a black trencher cap with a black silk tassel and a hood of black silk lined with the colour of the faculty, school or professional grouping and academic dress for juris doctor will be the same except that the tassel on the trencher cap is white silk rather than black silk.

Academic dress for doctors

  1. The academic dress for doctorates other than doctors of Philosophy, except for full dress, is a black trencher cap with a black silk tassel and a black gown with full sleeves and a hood of their degree.

    Full academic dress for doctorates other than doctors of Philosophy is a black velvet bonnet, a cherry gown faced with their faculty colour with a hood of black silk lined with colour of the faculty, school or professional grouping.

    Full academic dress for doctors of Philosophy is a black velvet bonnet and a black gown, faced with cherry silk, and a hood of cherry silk lined with cherry silk.

Academic Dress for diplomates (where applicable)

  1. Academic dress for diplomates is a plain black stuff gown with a black silk stole lined with the colour of the faculty, school or professional grouping.

Architecture, Building and Planning - all degrees magenta
Arts - all degrees except Social Work stewart blue

Social Work

chartreuse green
Economics and Commerce - all degrees sky blue
Education - all degrees malachite green
Engineering - all degrees gold
Graduate Studies pea green
Land and Food Resources - all degrees old gold
Law white; white with black band for undergraduate hoods
Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences:

Medicine, including Medical Science, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, and Surgery

Dentistry, including Dental Studies

Nursing
petunia

Health Sciences -for higher degrees offered by the Schools of Behavioural Science, Medicine (non-medical qualification prescription), Population Health, Physiotherapy (non-physiotherapy qualification prescription), Nursing (non-nursing qualification prescription), Rural Health

Music lilac
School of Enterprise empire blue
Science - all degrees except Optometry (including Biomedical Science and Bachelor of Arts and Sciences) olive green

Victorian College of the Arts – all degrees lemon, with the VCA pentagram embroidered in black on each shoulder

Colours

  1. The choice of colours used in this regulation is delegated to the Board.

    The Board has defined the colours mentioned in the regulation by reference to The British Colour Council Dictionary of Colour Standards (second edition, 1951) as follows (the numbers cited are those by which the dictionary describes the colour intended to be used for the purpose of academic dress):
