Vice-Chancellor's Fellowships were established in mid 1997 to provide "in residence" status for distinguished public intellectuals to promote their contributions to society in their particular area of expertise. Appointment is usually for one year, or may be taken part-time over several years.

FAA FRS, Appointed 2010Professor Zillman will use this opportunity to publish a book on the science of climate change and the role of climate science in the policy process. He will also develop the intellectual framework for a better integrated national and international approach to in situ and space-based earth observation and monitoring.
During his time as a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow he will also prepare a monograph on the history, economics, policy context, role, operation and management of National Meteorological, Hydrological and Oceanographic Services as a basis for capacity building in weather, climate, water and general environmental service provision in developing countries.
Professor Cory will undertake biomedical research at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and continue her involvement in the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC), an innovative science program for school students and teachers run jointly by the University’s Microbiology and Immunology Department, University High School, and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. In addition she will be involved in public communication in her areas of expertise (e.g. biomedical research, cancer) through contributions to conferences, seminars, and public lectures and other public forums.

Professor Coady will participate in the public life of the University in his time as a Vice-Chancellor's Fellow. In particular he will undertake research and complete at least one of two books, one on the topic of philosophical issues around religion and politics, and one on philosophical issues surrounding terrorism. He will also research and publish a number of articles, and be involved in public debate on his areas of expertise, including political violence, terrorism, Just War theory, religion and politics.

He will also use this opportunity to undertake research and publish a monograph dealing with equity in education, drawing on the work of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
Professor McGaw will be involved in public debate in his areas of expertise (e.g education, curriculum development, assessment and reporting) and will conduct interviews and discussions with staff and students who seek his advice.

While at the University, Professor Stanley will research and publish on a range of topics such as child and youth health and wellbeing, measuring societal progress and Aboriginal health and wellbeing. She will provide mentoring to staff and students, while contributing to the public life of the University by participating in workshops, seminars and public lectures.

She will also undertake research and develop a play about the writer Patricia Highsmith. In addition Ms Murray Smith will develop and deliver a series of guest lectures, and be involved in public debate in her areas of expertise (e.g. as a playwright, dramatist, screenwriter, and novelist) through contributions to workshops, seminars, public lectures and other public forums, including the media.

Phone: +61 3 9035 3948Dr Zable will work on a novel and a collection of stories that explore the themes of displacement, the crossing of cultural boundaries, and the role of story in putting a human face to contemporary political issues. In addition he will develop and deliver a series of seminars on the craft of writing, and the role of story in the classroom to graduate and post graduate students; as well as a series of guest lectures in various department and faculties. Already in the works for first semester are a cross-disciplinary seminar on refugee youth, a seminar on cultural objects and the stories they tell, and lectures on the role of story in understanding the nuances of the immigrant experience.
