A meeting of the Council was called to be held in the Council Chamber, University, on Monday 3 March 1997 at 4.00 p.m. A quorum of members was present at the time nominated for the commencement of the meeting, but because of disruption above and around the Council Chamber, a number of members removed to Conference Room 1, Old Physics Building. At 5.45 p.m. the Deputy Chancellor, Mrs Marles, called the meeting to order and was then asked by the meeting to take the chair.

Professor D G Beswick, Mr L J Carden, Hon. B Forwood, Mrs B M Hamer, Professor A G Klein, Dr B Lochtenberg and Mr D V C Tricks.
The Registrar (Mr J B Potter) and the Academic Registrar (Mr R I A Marshman) were in attendance.
Business
The meeting was advised that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and other members would be unable to join the meeting, and that the Vice-Chancellor had conveyed to those present his wish that the meeting not proceed. It was then moved, seconded and carried that this meeting adjourn to a time and place to be notified.
The meeting was then adjourned and did not re-convene. Urgent recommendations were submitted to a ballot of members pursuant to s.14A of the Melbourne University Act 1958 (see minutes of Council Meeting No 2).
