A meeting of the Council was held in the Governor’s Drawing Room, Government House, on Tuesday, 10 February 2009 at 5.15pm.

Business

Installation of the Hon. Alex Chernov as the Twentieth Chancellor of The University of Melbourne

  1. Deputy Chancellor Rosa Storelli declared the gathering to be a meeting of Council and thanked Governor de Kretser for his generosity in agreeing, as Visitor, to install the new Chancellor at Government House due to the emergency situation caused by bush fires in the State of Victoria.  It was noted that the usual ceremony had been cancelled as a mark of respect to those who have lost their lives in the fires.
  2. Deputy Chancellor Storelli acknowledged the Wurrundjeri People of the Kulin Nations, the traditional owners of the land on which the ceremony was taking place.
  3. The Visitor addressed the gathering.
  4. The University Secretary read the minute of the meeting of Council held on 8 December 2008, appointing the Hon Alex Chernov as the twentieth Chancellor of the University.
  5. The Vice-Chancellor presented the Chancellor to the Visitor for installation.
  6. The Chancellor formally accepted the rank, privileges and responsibilities of the position of Chancellor of the University of Melbourne and addressed the gathering.

The Chancellor closed the meeting and the presiding party retired.

At the invitation of the Governor, members of Council and guests attended a cocktail party in Government House.
