Approximately three hundred distinguished guests, members of staff and graduates were in attendance.

Business

Installation of the Chancellor

  1. Deputy Chancellor Justice Alex Chernov declared the gathering to be a meeting of Council at which Ian Renard would be installed as Chancellor. He acknowledged the Wurrundjeri People of the Kulin Nations, the traditional owners of the land on which the ceremony would take place.
  2. The Visitor, the Governor of Victoria, John Landy, MBE addressed the gathering.
  3. The University Secretary read the minute of Council appointing Ian Renard as the nineteenth Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.
  4. The Vice-Chancellor presented the Chancellor to the Visitor for installation.
  5. The Chancellor formally accepted the responsibilities as Chancellor of the University of Melbourne and addressed the gathering.
  6. The Melbourne Composition Choir presented two items.
  7. Twelve candidates were admitted to the degree of Juris Doctor.
  8. The Chancellor closed the meeting, following which afternoon tea was served in a pavilion in the Systems Garden.
