POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN ARTS (AREA OF STUDY)

1. Background

This proposal provides a generic structure for a Postgraduate Certificate in Arts with multiple streams. Streams will be tailored for each of our existing areas of study. That is, proposed streams will consist of appropriate fourth year level subject offerings currently available to students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts. The Postgraduate Certificate in Arts will be both a 'stand alone' qualification and a pathway to coursework masters programs for applicants with a cognate undergraduate degree or, in some instances, for applicants with a non cognate degree and one or more years of documented relevant professional work experience.

The Faculty of Arts predicts that recent changes to entry pathway requirements for masters coursework programs will mean that 150 point masters coursework programs (the equivalent of a postgraduate certificate followed by a 100 point masters coursework program) will become increasingly popular for graduate applicants with one year or more of documented professional work experience. For many applicants the Postgraduate Certificate in Arts will articulate into a 100 point coursework masters. It will also provide an exit award for students who do not complete the final 100 points of the 150 point coursework masters program.

2. Entry Requirements

An undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline, or a Graduate Diploma of Arts or equivalent.

3. Course Structure

The Postgraduate Certificate in Arts consists of 50 points of fourth year level study (four 12.5 point subjects) taken full time over one semester or part time over two years (one 12.5 point subject per semester).

Streams within the Postgraduate Certificate in Arts will mirror those that currently exist within Arts' postgraduate diplomas. Streams will also reflect areas of study in masters coursework programs into which the Postgraduate Certificate in Arts will articulate.

The following streams are therefore proposed:

The Postgraduate Certificate in Arts (Anthropology)
The Postgraduate Certificate in Arts (Applied Linguistics)
