The Diary of a Vice-Chancellor

Released in May 2002, Raymond Priestley's personal diary offers a perceptive and lively insider's account of academia during the 1930s. Priestley was the first salaried Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. It was a time of great upheaval, as Australian universities reshaped and reasserted themselves after the Great Depression.

Faculty of Science Centenary History

The sesquicentenary of the University is also the centenary of the Faculty of Science. The Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre is preparing a history of the Facult. The publication will be available in printed and on-line formats.

Health and Medical History On-line

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Science is developing an on-line catalogue of the rich collection of historical artifacts under its stewardship to allow students, staff and the community to make use of this valuable resource. The University of Melbourne has made a significant contribution to the health sciences over the past 150 years.

The contribution of the University of Melbourne to Australian theatre culture is well known but, so far, poorly documented. This project will build on research that brings together the stories of the various University theatre groups as a basis of a short chronological history of student theatre at Melbourne.

Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences: A Historical Compendium

This on-line project will collect narrative histories of the Faculty and its various departments and affiliates. The resulting digital reference will be of use to teachers and students and will provide a means of communication to an international, on-line audience.

Student Leader Interviews

People who were student leaders during their university days seem to be predisposed towards assuming leadership roles in their later life. This oral history project by the History of the University Unit involves interviews with ten student leaders per decade from the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's to investigate the relationship between the experience of leadership as a student and subsequent career, personal development and leadership roles in the community.

Melbourne Education: Sharing History

The Faculty of Education can trace its origins to the Melbourne Teachers’ College and the Melbourne State College that occupied the 1888 Building for most of the past 150 years. A publication based on oral history will be produced as an adjunct to a student and staff reunion to be held in 2003.
